You don't have to be a liberal to think the US position on the Georgian conflict is wacky.
Although Georgia was to blame for the present conflict, Georgia and the Bush administration have spinned the conflict in their favor. It's no surprise that Bush has once again played fast and loose with the facts. The question is how long people will be fooled by his spin.
Last fall Georgian president Saakashvili deployed riot police with tear gas, rubber bullets and batons against unarmed demonstrators. He also used his police to destroy an opposition television station, which went off the air as masked officers stormed it.
Bush's interventionist foreign policy has blown back against him.
At the end of the Cold War we were faced with two alternatives, assist and nurture Russia's fledgling democracy, or act as if nothing had really changed and continue to treat Russia as still our enemy.
